About Legacy+
Legacy+ is a collection of mods by the Legacy+ team, created and maintained by Yoniko (lead dev). The mods in question are for various historical versions of Minecraft, each one aiming to revitalize the game with new content and improve the overall experience by adding quality of life improvements.
How many mods are in the Legacy+ Collection?
The Legacy+ collection originally started out as a trilogy of mods for the earliest versions of Minecraft, namely
Classic+, Indev+ and Minecraft Infinite. Each mod follows a specific design philosophy and serves as a complete
overhaul for
its respective base version, almost like it came from an alternate universe, where Notch took a different approach
with the game’s development and design.
As of late 2025, the collection has been expanded with an additional trilogy of smaller-scale mods for the Alpha,
Beta and early Release era. These mods, contrary to the original trilogy, aim to simply improve the base version’s
gameplay experience by implementing quality of life additions and content that more accurately reflects the game’s
scope at the time.
Which mods are still supported?
As of August, 2026, this project has been concluded, and none of the mods are going to be receiving any updates or support, be it bug fixes or content additions.
Why even do all this?
The earliest builds of the game (those from 2009 and early 2010) have had the most potential to branch off into a completely different game. The Legacy+ project explores simply one of many possibilities for how the game we all know and love might have evolved. Each mod from the main trilogy follows a particular set of design guidelines that can be summed up in three words: Create, Survive & Explore.
- Create: Minecraft is and has always been a game about expressing one’s creativity. It is a sandbox at its core. As such, all of the Legacy+ mods aim to empower player creativity by adding a plethora of new blocks to build with. Classic+ follows this design pillar the most.
- Survive: Early Minecraft puts a heavy emphasis on the survival elements of the game. Nights are long and deadly, mobs are dangerous and the player should feel vulnerable at all times, forcing them to always be prepared. Indev+ follows this design pillar the most.
- Explore: Minecraft’s strongest trait ever since the introduction of infinite terrain back in early 2010, has been exploration. We believe that exploration should be rewarding to players, which is why we have done our best to make it feel worthwhile for any player type, be it builder or survivalist. Infdev+ follows this design pillar the most.
